What Do Armadillos Eat in Minecraft (and How to Breed Them)

The armadillo is one of Minecraft's newest passive mobs—adorable, quirky, and surprisingly useful in-game. Here’s everything you need to know about what they eat, where to find them, and how to build your own armadillo family.
What Do Armadillos Eat? (Spider Eyes)
Minecraft armadillos have a unique diet—they love spider eyes. This unusual preference lets you breed armadillos and even make them follow you.
How to Breed Armadillos
- Find two adult armadillos in warm biomes like savannas or badlands.
- Hold a spider eye and right-click (Java) or tap (Bedrock) to feed each one.
- You’ll see hearts appear as they enter love mode. If both are fed, a baby armadillo will appear.
- Each spider eye also speeds up a baby’s growth by 10% per feed.
Where to Find Armadillos
Armadillos spawn in savanna biomes, badlands, and their variants (savanna plateaus, eroded badlands). They typically appear in groups of 2–3 in savannas and 1–2 in badlands biomes.
They’ll follow you within 10 blocks (Java) or 16 blocks (Bedrock) if you're holding a spider eye.
Why Armadillos Are Useful
- Scutes for Wolf Armor: Instead of killing armadillos, use a Brush to collect scutes non-lethally. The scutes can then be used to craft Wolf Armor.
- Passive Functionality: Armadillos slowly drop a scute every few minutes without interaction—so they’re a renewable resource.
