Is Rust Cross-Platform? (PC, Xbox, and PlayStation Guide)

One of the most common questions for new Rust players is whether they can team up with friends on different platforms. With the release of Rust Console Edition, the community grew massive overnight—but are we all playing on the same servers?

The short answer is no, but also yes. It depends entirely on which platforms you are trying to connect. Here is the breakdown of how crossplay works in Rust.

PC vs. Console: The Hard Split

If you are on PC (Steam) and your friend is on Xbox or PlayStation, you cannot play together.

Rust on PC and Rust Console Edition are effectively two separate games.

• Different Developers: PC is developed by Facepunch Studios, while the Console Edition is handled by Double Eleven.
• Update Schedules: The PC version is usually months (or years) ahead in terms of content (monuments, items, mechanics).
• Balance Differences: Recoil patterns, map sizes, and aim assist mechanics differ drastically to accommodate controllers.

Because of these fundamental differences, there is no cross-play between PC and Console.

Xbox and PlayStation Crossplay

If you are on Xbox (One/Series X) and your friend is on PlayStation (4/5), yes, you can play together.

Rust Console Edition features full cross-platform multiplayer between consoles. When looking for a server, look for the special Crossplay icon in the server browser.

• Crossplay Servers: Allow both Xbox and PlayStation users.
• Platform-Specific Servers: Some servers are restricted to Xbox-only or PlayStation-only if you prefer to avoid cross-platform lobbies.
