How to Make Netherite Armor in Minecraft (1.20+ Update)

Diamond isn't the endgame anymore. Here is the step-by-step guide to crafting Netherite gear using the new Smithing Templates.

How to Make Netherite Armor in Minecraft (1.20+ Update)

For over a decade, full Diamond armor was the ultimate status symbol in Minecraft. But since the Nether Update (and the more recent Trails & Tales update), Diamond is just a stepping stone.

If you want to survive the Warden or swim in lava without burning instantly, you need Netherite. However, the crafting recipe changed significantly in version 1.20. You can no longer just combine an ingot with your armor.

Here is the updated, correct way to craft Netherite armor in Minecraft.

Step 1: Find Ancient Debris

Netherite doesn't generate as an ore you can mine directly. You have to find Ancient Debris in the Nether.

  • Best Y-Level: Y = 15
  • Tool: Diamond Pickaxe (or better) is required to mine it.
  • Tip: Use TNT or Beds to blow up large areas of the Netherrack, exposing the debris hidden inside.

Step 2: Smelt Scraps & Craft Ingots

Once you have the Ancient Debris, smelt it in a Furnace or Blast Furnace to get Netherite Scrap.

To make 1 Netherite Ingot, you need:

  • 4 Netherite Scraps
  • 4 Gold Ingots

Combine them in a crafting table (the arrangement doesn't matter) to create one Netherite Ingot.

Step 3: Find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template

This is the step most returning players miss. In 1.20+, you now need a Smithing Template to upgrade your gear.

  • Where to find it: Bastion Remnants (treasure chests).
  • How to duplicate it: Once you find one, don't use it immediately! You can duplicate it using 7 Diamonds and 1 Netherrack. Always keep a master copy.

Step 4: The Smithing Table

Finally, grab a Smithing Table and combine your items:

  1. Slot 1: Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
  2. Slot 2: Diamond Armor Piece (Chestplate, Helmet, etc.)
  3. Slot 3: Netherite Ingot

Pull your new Netherite armor out of the result slot. It keeps all enchantments from your diamond gear but gains Knockback Resistance and higher toughness.

Exploring the Nether without Lag

Searching for Bastions requires loading thousands of chunks in the Nether, which is notoriously laggy on standard hosts. If you are running a server for friends, ensure your hardware can handle the heat. berrybyte Minecraft Hosting uses high-performance Ryzen CPUs to ensure your chunk loading is instant, even while flying with an Elytra.
