Best Enchantments for the Trident in Minecraft

Riptide or Loyalty? Here is how to build the ultimate Trident for combat or travel.

Best Enchantments for the Trident in Minecraft

The Trident is one of the most versatile weapons in Minecraft, acting as both a melee spear and a ranged javelin. But unlike a sword, a Trident is practically useless without enchantments.

Because some Trident enchantments are mutually exclusive (you can't have them all at once), you effectively have to choose between two builds: the Storm Fighter or the Traveler.

The "Storm Fighter" Build (Combat Focused)

This build is designed for ranged damage and crowd control.

  1. Loyalty III: The most essential enchantment. When you throw the trident, it flies back to your hand automatically. Without this, you will lose your weapon constantly.
  2. Channeling: Strikes lightning on any mob you hit during a thunderstorm. Essential for charging Creepers or turning Villagers into Witches.
  3. Impaling V: Increases damage against aquatic mobs (Guardians, Drowned, Fish). Note: On Java Edition, this only works on water mobs. On Bedrock, it works on any mob touching water/rain.
  4. Unbreaking III / Mending: Tridents have low durability; these are mandatory to keep it from breaking.

The "Traveler" Build (Movement Focused)

This build turns you into a human jet.

  1. Riptide III: When you "throw" the trident while standing in water or rain, it launches you forward instead of the weapon.
    • Conflict: Riptide is incompatible with Loyalty and Channeling. You cannot have both.
  2. Unbreaking III / Mending: Launching yourself consumes durability fast.

Which is Better?

  • Choose Riptide if you have an Elytra. You can use the Riptide launch to propel yourself into the sky even when it’s raining, saving firework rockets.
  • Choose Loyalty/Channeling for a dedicated weapon slot, especially if you enjoy raiding Ocean Monuments.

Lag-Free Combat

Trident physics (especially Loyalty returning animations) can get glitchy on laggy servers. If you notice your Trident disappearing or taking seconds to return, it might be time to upgrade your server.
